Who we are

Edinburgh Operational Research Corporation Ltd is a technology company specialising in optimisation and decision support under uncertainty for energy systems. We focus on developing rigorous, scalable methods to support planning and investment decisions in complex, uncertain environments.

Our focus

Our work is grounded in operational research, applied mathematics, and energy systems analysis. We place particular emphasis on explicit representations of uncertainty, recognising that long-term energy decisions are shaped by factors such as demand evolution, technology costs, policy developments, and market dynamics.

How we work

We work with energy asset owners, infrastructure planners, and organisations involved in long-term energy system planning. Our approach prioritises transparency, robustness, and interpretability, enabling decision-makers to explore trade-offs and understand the implications of alternative assumptions.

The Team

Dr Hongyu Zhang
Director

Hongyu holds a PhD in Operational Research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has over seven years of research experience in energy system modelling and stochastic optimisation, with a focus on decision-making under uncertainty.

Tommaso Ferrario
Software Engineer

Tommaso holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca. His master’s thesis focused on scenario generation using machine learning techniques.

Gabriele Sormani
Software Engineer

Gabriele holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Data Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca. His master’s thesis investigated accelerating the solution of large-scale stochastic power system models using machine learning.
